Kedron Lions Juniors are proud to support AFL Queensland’s latest umpiring initiatives for 2026, which focus on creating a more positive, rewarding and welcoming environment for young officials.
A key part of the update includes increased pay rates for umpires, recognising the important role they play each week and helping attract and retain more junior officials across the game. For many young people, umpiring provides a great opportunity to earn money while staying active, building confidence and developing leadership skills.
Alongside these pay increases, there is also a fresh new look for under-18 umpires this season.
To help create a safer and more supportive environment, U18 umpires will now wear orange wristbands during matches. These bands act as a clear visual signal that they are developing umpires, encouraging players, coaches and spectators to show understanding, patience and respect as they learn the game.
In addition, under-18 umpires will be wearing brand new crew socks, offering a more relaxed and comfortable uniform to help them feel confident on game day.
These changes are part of a broader push by AFL Queensland to ensure umpiring is a positive experience for everyone involved. At Kedron Lions Juniors, we know that football simply cannot happen without umpires, and it is vital that we support them at every level of the game.
When you see the orange wristbands this season, it’s a reminder that these young umpires are developing their skills and contributing to our club and community. Respecting and encouraging them is something we can all play a part in.
Kedron Lions Juniors encourage all players, families and supporters to get behind our umpires throughout the season — and for those interested in getting involved, there has never been a better time to start.
