This week we celebrate the invaluable role that umpires play in our great game. Whether it’s Auskick, Juniors, Youth or Senior footy, every match needs someone in the middle to keep things fair, safe and running smoothly. Umpires are not just rule enforcers—they are mentors, leaders and essential contributors to the spirit of the game.
But the reality is, we simply don’t have enough of them.
Across the country, umpires are facing increasing levels of abuse and poor behaviour from the sidelines. It’s not only unacceptable—it’s driving people away from the game. Without umpires, there is no footy. We must do better to support and respect them at all levels.
Community Umpiring Week is also a great time to think about getting involved. Umpiring is a fantastic way to stay active, develop leadership skills and be part of the footy community. Whether you’re a past player, a footy fan or just want to give something back—there’s a place for you in the umpiring ranks. Let’s back our umpires. Let’s grow the game. Let’s show respect.
